I Got Stung By A Bee – What Should I Do?

September 15, 2022

Nobody likes getting stung by a bee. It’s painful, and it can be terrifying if you’re allergic to bee bites. If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain and prevent any further complications.

#1 Remain Calm

First and foremost, try to remain calm. It’s important to avoid further provoking the bee as this will only make the situation worse. If you’re able to, gently brush the bee away with a piece of paper or your hand.

If you’re allergic to bees, it’s vital to seek medical attention immediately, as you may be at risk for anaphylactic shock. If you’re not sure you’re allergic, watch for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, hives, dizziness, or fainting.

#2 Remove The Sting

Once the bee has stung you, it’ll die. So the next step is removing the stinger as quickly as possible; this can be done with a pair of tweezers or by scraping it off with a blunt object like a credit card.

#3 Wash The Area Thoroughly

Once the stinger has been removed, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. Even though bees can only sting once, they leave a trace of pheromones indicating your location so other bees can find you to attack again.

#4 Apply Cold Water Compress Or An Ice Pack

Apply a cold compress to the area for about 15 minutes to ease the pain. If the discomfort persists after 15 min, take step #5.

#5 Take Over The Counter Meds If Need It

The sting will still be painful even if you’re not allergic to bees, but it’s not considered a medical emergency. You can take over-the-counter antihistaminics and painkillers to help you with the pain, swelling, and discomfort.

Do Not Underestimate Bee Colonies In Your Property

Bee colonies can appear and become a significant hazard in a few weeks for everyone around it. Bee removal is essential not only for your safety but also for the safety of others. If you have bees on your property, it’s best to call a professional beekeeper or pest control company specializing in bee extermination. They’ll safely remove the bees and relocate them to a new home where they can continue to thrive.
